Opioid receptor binding-which is when something finds a way to attach itself to a special space in the brain that is meant to receive the signals that opioid medications send-causes the signs and symptoms of overdose. They can also have an impact on other systems of the body, including altering mood, slowing breathing, and causing constipation. Opioids make it harder for the brain to detect pain by changing the body’s perception of pain. The prescribed medication-like buprenorphine, naltrexone, or methadone-normalizes brain chemistry, relieves physiological cravings, and normalizes body functions without the other substance’s negative withdrawal effects. These types of programs often take place in clinics which are also often known as suboxone clinics. MAT can make a world of difference in long-term recovery for those struggling with addiction. Methadone can only be offered by certain facilities specifically licensed to provide it. At Serenity Lane we can assist with buprenorphine and Suboxone but we do not offer Methadone. These work best in combination with clinical therapies for the treatment of substance use disorders-which is why MAT exists.
